PHOTOGRAPH THE TIGERS OF INDIA
To see a tiger in the wild for the very first time is like something you’ll never forget.
It’s better than what you could imagine.
To experience these astonishing creatures first-hand… finding words to describe that feeling is hard—it simply takes your breath away. It will be an experience that you will always cherish.
Listening out for the distress calls of Chital, Sambar, and langurs, there is nothing to compare with the excitement of tracking and trying to predict where the tiger will appear—and then actually finding a tiger in the wild. What an incredible thrill that is. Seeing these apex predators in their natural habitat is simply beyond compare. But sighting one of these beautiful striped cats takes a real play of strategy and teamwork between drivers, naturalists, and guides to try and outsmart this shy and elusive stripy predator.
Come with me and discover the crown jewel of India’s natural heritage – the magnificent royal Bengal tiger!
We’ll visit two locations for this safari: Tadoba Tiger Reserve and Kanha National Park.
Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve and Kanha National Park are two of the finest destinations in India for tiger photography safaris, each offering a distinct experience for wildlife photographers.
Tadoba, located in Maharashtra, is renowned for its high tiger density and open, dry deciduous forests, which make tiger sightings both frequent and visually accessible. The landscape, dominated by bamboo thickets and scattered meadows, allows for clean, unobstructed views—ideal for capturing striking images of tigers in natural behavior. Tigers in Tadoba are well-habituated to vehicles, often providing close encounters that translate into excellent photographic opportunities. In addition to tigers, the park also offers sightings of leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, and Indian gaur, adding to its appeal for wildlife lovers. The compact size of the park ensures good coverage during each safari, and access via Nagpur makes it a convenient option for short, high-impact trips focused on tiger imagery.
In contrast, Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh offers a more expansive and visually rich environment, with lush sal forests, wide grassy meadows, and mist-filled valleys that have inspired countless photographers and writers—including Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.
While tiger sightings are a bit less predictable in Kanha due to its vast size and more elusive cats, the reward when they do appear is immense: tigers photographed against Kanha’s golden grasslands or emerging from morning fog create some of the most evocative images possible in Indian wildlife photography.
The park is also home to a broader range of wildlife, including the rare barasingha (swamp deer), leopards, jackals, and wild dogs. Kanha is ideal for photographers seeking not only tiger encounters but also a deeper, more immersive natural experience in a breathtakingly scenic setting.
Experiencing tigers in the wilds of India is probably one of the most amazing experiences you will ever have.
I do hope you can join us on this safari.
Cheers,
Tom
